Bioenergy has become central to the debate on how to replace Russian natural gas. However, land is a limited resource and Germany’s land footprint is already disproportionally high. A prioritization on how to best use biomass in the sustainable bioeconomy - putting food first - is needed. Three key actions to address competing uses are presented.
