The Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI analysed the role of technological innovations in the bioeconomy and their impacts on the economy and the environment in the Symobio 2.0 project. In four case studies on biopharmaceuticals, bio-based surfactants, meat alternatives, and AI in regenerative agriculture, qualitative and quantitative impacts are assessed for Germany by exploiting different methodological approaches for economic impact and review of sustainability assessment studies.
The analysis show that Germany has potential as a development and production hub, but the early maturity of most technologies does not yet allow indication for clear market leadership. Biopharmaceuticals stand out with the highest diffusion of biotechnology and a relatively mature market presence. In contrast, innovations in the other fields occupy niche markets with diverging market level projections. All innovations show potential to address economic and sustainability challenges, but still data gaps and future uncertainties exist, calling for further targeted data analysis and continuous assessments.
